How to use ssh as a socks5 proxy server? here is the result:
Using ssh as a socks5 proxy or encrypted tunnel to browse the web can sometimes be necessary:
- When you’re at a conference but need to login securely to your site.
- When local access restrictions make life really difficult.
- If you have a server in another country and want to see what adverts people see in that country.
I use ssh for the tow reason. I want to see local access restrictions sites in the www.
use this command to mank ssh for a socks5 proxy server
ssh -D 7070 -Nf example.com
Replace example.com with your own hostname. That short command will create a socks5 proxy at 127.0.0.1:7070. Just configure your browser to talk to that and you’re surfing again!
if you use myentunnel, please see the figure below:the click the connect botton.

Next, set up your browser to use the proxy server. Most browsers include proxy support. For Firefox 3, go to Edit→Preferences→Advanced→Network→Settings, and specify that you want to use a Manual Proxy, localhost, port 7070 and SOCKS v5 (although OpenSSH supports both versions 4 and 5).
